Events & Fun

People who work and live in South Haven are blessed with a quality of life that includes the recreation and leisure offered by beautiful Lake Michigan and the bustling Black River harbor. Several City beaches spanning nearly a mile of Lake Michigan coastline provide enjoyment of swimming, picnicking, water craft, and many other recreational activities for residents and visitors of all ages. The Black River harbor accommodates over 1,200 recreational boat slips, including three municipal marinas providing seasonal, transient, and launching facilities. South Haven's boaters and pier fishermen enjoy some of the finest Great Lakes fishing for trout, salmon, and perch. Sailing and pleasure boating are just as popular at the port of South Haven.

Fruit picking is another fun activity for South Haven residents and visitors to enjoy. The area is known for its blueberries, peaches, apples and more. Each spring, summer and fall bring a cornucopia of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Cross-country skiing, hiking and biking are popular and readily available in South Haven via the Kal-Haven Trail. This 33 mile long trail meanders through some of Van Buren County's most scenic areas along a former railroad bed between South Haven and Kalamazoo. Each year over 80,000 people enjoy the trail.

Other activities include visits to the Michigan Maritime Museum, Liberty Hyde Baily Museum and the South Haven Center for the Arts. Of course, strolling through the unique shops and restaurants remains one of the top past-times.

Annually, festive activities for all ages take place, including Ice Breaker in February, Harborfest in June, July 4 Celebration, Blueberry Festival in August, All Crafts Fair Labor Day Weekend and the Antique Engine & Tractor Show in September. In season, Gingerman Raceway hosts a variety of automobile and motorcycle rallies and races.

The City of South Haven provides a network of eight neighborhood parks for year-round family enjoyment. There are three local golf courses, and dozens of scenic 18, 27, and 36-hole courses within a 25 minute drive of South Haven. During winter months, popular outdoor activities include downhill and cross country-skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and skating.
