The South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce was pleased to welcome new member First United Methodist Church with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 10th.
First United Methodist Church has had a presence in downtown South Haven since 1855. Though the building has no doubt changed substantially over the last 163 years, it remains in a prominent location at the corner of Michigan Ave. and Center St.
First UMC hosts two services each Sunday; an early service at 8:30am, largely focused on communion and prayer, and a traditional service at 11:00am, complete with formal choir, pipe organ and full sermon. Sunday School for all ages is held at 9:30am. Services and programs are open to all, and newcomers are especially welcome.
Though the Church enjoys a fairly stable congregation, new Pastor Ron VanLente, who took his post at First United Methodist Church in July, has plans for revitalizing and expanding worship offerings to reach more people- both residents and visitors. “We want to find ways to provide a spiritual experience for guests to South Haven,” VanLente says.
