    Position Summary
    Responsible for performing engineering activities related to field surveys, drafting, project planning, design, plan review, and inspection of both public and private sanitary sewer, water, streets, city facility, parks, and storm sewer improvements.
    Position Description
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Applies general engineering principles to the solution of specific engineering problems.

    • Correspond with the public, contractors, developers, and public agencies as necessary via phone, email, mail.

    • Gathers information for inclusion in engineering reports and staff reports as needed.

    • Reviews proposed plans for compliance with City Ordinances.

    • Assists with site plan review for engineering, water, sanitary, storm and streets.

    • Assists with reviewing and evaluating proposals for consultant work.

    • Obtains civil and environmental permits with multiple agencies.

    • Writes and edits construction specifications and engineering reports.

    • Writes property descriptions for sales of land and easements for utilities.

    • Performs inspections on certain City projects.

    • Writes grant and funding applications.

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field required.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Required: The ability to prepare plans and estimates of infrastructure projects. Knowledge of basic civil engineering principles, practices, methods, and materials. Skilled in technical writing/communication. Able to make accurate engineering calculations.
    • Preferred: Related internship work experience.

    Licensing and Certification
    Required: Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License and good driving record.

    Preferred: Possess or have the ability to possess a Fundamentals in Engineering Certificate, and/or the Engineering in Training certification. Ability and desire to work towards taking the Professional Engineer exam.

    Tools and Equipment Used
    Desktop computer or laptop utilizing various business and engineering applications.

    Physical Demands
    Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers, various pieces of office equipment and survey equipment.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear.

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    This position regularly works in an office setting with a controlled climate where they sit and work on a computer; communicate by telephone, email or in person, and move around the office or travel to other locations.

    An employee in this position is also required to occasionally work outside the office at field sites, including visiting construction sites with treacherous terrain, requiring the employee to traverse uneven ground, climb up or crawl down to access the site, and may involve fumes, dust, chemicals or other hazardous materials, loud machinery and equipment and other dangers associated with engineering projects and construction sites. An employee in this position must have the strength, stamina and physical coordination needed to gain access to the construction project sites described above, observe and inspect work in progress.
