Earth Day at The Bailey Museum

The Bailey Museum is kicking off spring with a celebration of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22 starting at 10 a.m. 
            The museum will have several speakers, a picnic and an opportunity for sharing garden books and magazines, bulbs and seeds.  Wrapping up the day-long event will be an evening concert with The Bloomquists.
            Beginning at 10 a.m. Dr. Fenske will present a talk on native bees.  He will discuss their pollination habits and unusual houses.  He will share his expertise on setting-up a 'bee house' in your yard.  Bee houses and materials will be available for purchase.
            At 11:00 a.m. Nor Serocki will discuss invasive species and eradicating them from the environment.  Serocki is the coordinator for the Michigan Invasive Species Coalition for SW X SW.
            After a free picnic lunch, Heather Catania will present a slide show on creating a landscape full of native plants at 1:00 p.m.  Catania has converted her yard into a native plant sanctuary.  She is a member of The Wild Ones, a native plant advocacy group.
            At 3:00 Jim France, Director of the South Haven Memorial Library, will discuss the new Seed Library project.  France will show participants how they can contribute and support the local project.  This is part of a national trend to preserve seeds.
            On-going during Earth Day, event participants can exchange seeds, exchange/swap garden books or magazines.  There will be dozens of magazines or books.  Participants can also buy surplus Canna Bulbs from the Bailey gardens.  Earth Day events are free to the public and open to all ages.  The museum exhibition and gift shop will be open.
            Finally, at 7:30 p.m. there will be a concert with Michigan folk duo The Bloomquists.  Ruth and Max Bloomquist celebrate 40 years of performing their style of Acoustic Americana, with roots in Folk, Bluegrass, and traditional Country music.  Ruth is well known for her songwriting as well as her striking alto voice. 
            The concert is produced by Foundry Hall and advance tickets are $10 and available online at www.brownpapertickets.com or in person at Phoenix Records in South Haven.  $15 tickets are available at the door.  Foundry Hall members are $10 at the door and kids are free!
