Michigan Maritime Museum Lecture Series: Great Lakes Fishing Heritage
The Michigan Maritime Museum will be hosting speaker Brandon Schroeder of Michigan SeaGrant to speak about preserving fisheries heritage in his presentation, “Fish Tales: A Story of Great Lakes Fishing Heritage.” The presentation will be held April 16th from 12-1pm at the Museum
Great Lakes fisheries – fish and people who fish – have significantly benefited coastal communities, the Great Lakes region and the nation throughout history and still today. Ecologically, economically and recreationally valuable, Great Lakes fisheries have supported people and communities for generations. Great Lakes fish and fishing – tribal, commercial, and recreational – have shaped the culture, economy, and quality of life for people in Michigan. Learn about our dynamic Great Lakes fisheries and a new Great Lakes Fisheries Heritage Trail that offers opportunity to explore the past, present and future of the lakes through the lens of fish and fishing. Museum exhibits and educational opportunities, events and experiences along this trail highlight our fisheries heritage, ecology, management, and the economic and social issues that have defined Michigan’s coastal communities.
Brandon Schroeder is a Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator who works with coastal communities in northeast Michigan to apply science-based knowledge to address Great Lakes issues locally. His Sea Grant Extension efforts involve fisheries science, biodiversity conservation, sustainable coastal tourism development, and Great Lakes education. He provides co-leadership for the Great Lakes Fisheries Heritage Consortium and newly established Great Lakes Fisheries Heritage Trail in Michigan.
Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for seniors. There is no admission fee for Museum members.
