The Historical Association of South Haven will hold its spring open house on May 28 from 7-9pm, where they will debut the exhibit "Catskills of the Midwest- The Jewish Resort Era in South Haven".
The Historical Association of South Haven will revisit the popular “CATSKILLS OF THE MIDWEST: The Jewish Resort Era in South Haven” this year. First mounted in 2005 at the South Haven Center for the Arts, this exhibit proved to be one of the organization’s most popular, bringing out crowds for the opening and an extended run on the east side of the state.
The exhibit focuses on the bustling Jewish resort trade in South Haven, how it evolved from the early farm resorts and the subsequent contributions made to South Haven by these creative and determined entrepreneurs. It will include numerous photographs and artifacts from private collections, as well as images from the HASH archives. The exhibit has been updated extensively in order to accurately reflect the changes that South Haven has undergone in the decade since it was last presented.
The opening reception for the exhibit will take place on Saturday, May 28 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Hartman School building located at 355 Hubbard St. in South Haven. A slide show of the Jewish resorts will begin at 7:30. The opening is free and open to the public.
On Sunday, June 26th, the HASH and the First Hebrew Congregation will host a progressive Jewish brunch from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Starting at the HASH’s Hartman School building, guests will have an opportunity to tour the exhibit as well as feasting on traditional Jewish fare, then progress on to the synagogue where desserts will be served. The Klezmedics will provide entertainment at that venue and tours of the historic synagogue will be given. A trolley between sites will be available. Tickets for this event can be purchased from Lakeshore Paint/Artworks located at 263 Broadway or through the HASH office.
