Indigenous Art Unveiling and Brunch

The event features the unveiling of three original artworks by acclaimed Pokagon artist Justin Johnson: “The Keeper of the Fire,” “The Three Sisters,” and “The Drum,” all to be on permanent display at Epiphany. Johnson has recently been featured on the cover of PAN-O-PLY art magazine, and he received a tribute award from the state of Michigan for his artwork at the Buchanan District Library. His latest work is a mural on the new football stadium at Northwestern University.

Johnson will share pieces of his personal story as a member of the Potawatomi Tribe and offer insight into his artistic style, cultural influences, and creative vision behind each piece.

Event Highlights:
- Free Brunch (12:00 PM): The event opens after our 10:30 service of Holy Eucharist with a complimentary brunch (as Epiphany hosts every Sunday) welcoming neighbors, families, and community members to gather and connect.

- Artist Presentation & Unveiling (12:30 PM): Justin Johnson will reveal “The Keeper of the Fire,” “The Three Sisters,” and “The Drum,” explaining the symbolism and narrative embedded in each piece.

- Blessing of the Artwork (1:00 PM): The afternoon will conclude with a formal blessing of the new artwork, honoring the stories and traditions represented while recognizing them within the wider spiritual tradition of all peoples of this land.

This event is only the beginning of our church’s work with our local indigenous community. We hope the continued display of Justin’s artwork will always remind us of a story larger than our own, and that it will urge us onward to seek healing relationships for the sake of all peoples and creatures who have come to share this beautiful land here on the shores of Lake Michigan.
